This report presents and discusses the findings and recommendations of the study "Access to Safe Water for the Base of the Pyramid". The study was sponsored by AFD-Proparco, Aqua for All, the BoP Innovation Center, the Children Investment Fund Foundation, Finagestion, Suez Environnement, and Veolia Environnement, and was conducted by Hystra – in collaboration with Ashoka, from October 2010 to June 2011.
This report focuses on:
Mapping and analyzing innovative enterprises and projects led by social entrepreneurs, NGOs and businesses that provide safe water to the poor in a sustainable and affordable manner.
Understanding what hinders their growth, proposing strategic recommendations for the public sector, philanthropic and commercial players, as to how they can help bring such innovations to scale.
The readers will also find detailed case studies for 15 of the most innovative, market-based enterprises and projects, with a large scale and proven results on the ground.
A major finding was that all the proposed scale-up strategies would require the creation of entire new industries, rather than the growth of a few organizations. Unprecedented collaboration is needed to make this happen. We hope this report will contribute to making this vision a reality.
